Ice cream trucks must end sales an hour earlier in Mundelein

After a resident's complaint about noise, Mundelein officials have cut back operating hours for ice cream trucks.

Effective immediately, ice cream truck drivers working in Mundelein must stop serving customers by 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, rather than 9 p.m.

Trucks can begin their musical delivery service at 9 a.m. as usual on those six days.

Sunday service hours will continue to be noon to 6 p.m.

The change also applies to door-to-door peddlers and other solicitors in Mundelein because they're covered by the same ordinance.

"Do we want them knocking on doors at 9 o'clock at night, or is 8 o'clock late enough?" Public Safety Director Eric Guenther said during Monday's village board meeting.

The ordinance doesn't apply to food trucks set up at locations, Village Administrator John Lobaito said.

The village board unanimously approved the change Monday.

It was prompted by a complaint about noise emanating from an ice cream truck at night, according to a village memo. The truck driver was following the village's rules, the memo said, but officials pursued changing the operating hours anyway.

Mundelein ended a 53-year-long local ban on ice cream trucks in July 2016.

Service hours for such trucks vary in other towns, the Mundelein memo said. For example:

• In Vernon Hills, trucks can serve customers seven days a week between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

• In Libertyville and Lake Zurich, they can serve customers seven days a week between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

• In Lincolnshire, trucks can sell treats Mondays through Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., but not at all on Sundays.
