State college board seeks input on adult education plan

The Illinois Community College Board this month is seeking public input on the draft Illinois Adult Education Strategic Plan.

The plan is being developed under Senate Joint Resolution 40, which created a task force on the future of adult education and literacy charged with developing a five-year strategic plan.

"The Strategic Plan must demonstrate an understanding and respect for adult education programs and students and provide a road map that leads to better educational and employment opportunities," said Karen Hunter Anderson, ICCB executive director and task force chairwoman.

Two informational meetings are set for 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Holiday Inn & Suites, 3202 E. Empire, Bloomington, and 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 12 at Moraine Valley Community College, Building M, 900 W. College Parkway, Palos Hills. Officials will discuss the process, vision, guiding principles, goals and objectives, and next steps.

Attendance is free but registration is required at iccb.org.

The draft plan will be released on ICCB's website Monday. Individuals, groups and organizations are encouraged to submit written comments directly to ICCB on plan specifics. Comments will be accepted through Jan. 12 and must be sent to nora.l.rossman@illinois.gov.

The task force will submit its strategic plan to the governor and General Assembly by Jan. 31. For more information, contact Jennifer Foster, deputy director for adult education and workforce, at (217) 785-0171 or Jennifer.Foster@illinois.gov.

Illinois is home to 48 community colleges in 39 districts and has the third-largest community college system in the nation serving nearly 850,000 residents yearly.
