Police seeking vandals who damaged Naperville golf course

Naperville police say they don't have any idea who entered a golf course on a recent night and caused at least $14,700 damage. So they're seeking the public's help.

The damage was reported overnight Tuesday, Nov. 21, into Wednesday, Nov. 22, at White Eagle Golf Club, 3400 Club Drive.

Police said vandals entered the course between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. and damaged plastic green covers at three holes and broke six lights illuminating the entrance drive.

Crews are still working to repair the damage, which is the largest case of vandalism since General Manager Paul Geallis joined the club more than seven years ago, he said Monday.

The vandal or vandals cut green covers protecting holes 5, 6 and 11, Geallis said. The thick, breathable plastic coverings will cost roughly $2,000 to $2,500 each to replace.

Fixing the six lights that were broken, possibly with a baseball bat, could bring the total cost of repairs to more than $15,000, he said.

The golf course does not have any surveillance video showing the areas that were vandalized, and Naperville police Cmdr. Lou Cammiso said investigators do not have any leads.

Naperville Crime Stoppers on Monday began offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case. Anyone with information is asked to call (630) 420-6006. Callers may remain anonymous.

The golf course is part of a community of 1,100 houses, and Geallis said there are not gates at any of its entrances. Whoever damaged the green covers and lights would not have had to jump a fence or break in to reach the course.
