One killed in Bensenville apartment fire

Fire swept through an 18-unit apartment building in Bensenville early yesterday, killing one resident and leaving several others homeless, authorities said. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire and learn more about the fatality, Fire Chief Michael Spain said. No other injuries were reported. Full story.

Kane County to hold 'Black Wednesday' DUI patrols

Kane County will hold another "No Refusal" anti-drunk driving event Wednesday night, commonly referred to as "Black Wednesday." State's Attorney Joe McMahon announced the event well in advance so people can arrange safe transportation if they are going to be out on what is considered by many as the biggest party night of the year. AP Exclusive: 4 in 5 Illinois debris sites high in toxins

Four in five Illinois quarries that backfill with concrete and other demolition waste show higher-than-acceptable levels of toxins, according to state sampling results obtained Associated Press. Illinois Environmental Protection Agency testing last spring produced levels exceeding allowable limits of arsenic, lead, mercury, atrazine and other heavy metals and pesticides as well as volatile organic compounds that can cause health hazards.
