Driver dies after car hits tree in Libertyville

A 64-year-old woman was killed in a crash in Libertyville Friday.

Libertyville police said the woman, a Libertyville resident who has not been identified, was the driver and sole occupant of a car that had struck a tree and caught fire.

The crash occurred shortly after 2 p.m. at Triangle Park on Crane Boulevard between Carter and Burdick Streets.

The car caught fire after the impact, firefighters said. Police officers arrived on the scene first and used portable extinguishers to help put out the blaze. After being freed from the wrecked car, the driver was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where she was pronounced dead.

Two Libertyville police officers who extinguished the fire were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Firefighters said the officers were exposed to chemicals from the extinguishers.

The Libertyville Police Department has requested the assistance of the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team and the coroner's office in investigating the crash.
