Naperville police seek suspect in attack on mail carrier

Police are searching for a man accused of punching a woman while she was delivering mail Wednesday in Naperville.

The man fled in a newer black Nissan with an Illinois license plate starting with "Q," Naperville police Cmdr. Lou Cammiso said.

The Nissan last was seen heading south on Washington Street from 11th Street, which is a few blocks north of Ogden Avenue.

The letter carrier reported she was assaulted shortly after noon while she was delivering mail near 11th Avenue and Main Street.

Cammiso said the attacker tried to take the woman's phone and caused her minor injuries.

The suspect is described as a tall, thin black man in his 40s with black/gray hair and missing four front top teeth, wearing a black knit cap, bleached blue jeans. hoodie, black jacket, red high-top shoes and a light-blue surgical mask, according to a news release.

Cammiso said the suspect got into the passenger side of the Nissan, which fled the area.

Officers are on the lookout for the car and asking anyone who sees a vehicle matching its description to call 911.

Investigators are trying to determine the motive for the assault. Anyone with information can call Naperville police at (630) 305-5920 and speak to Det. Reed.
