Police: Man dies after fight at own birthday party

Kane County prosecutors have charged two Aurora brothers in connection with a fight that resulted in the death of a third man, authorities said Tuesday.

Jose M. Alejandre, 32, of the 3400 block of Fox Hill Road, and his brother, Raul Colin, 35, of the 600 block of South Spencer Street, have each been charged with aggravated battery. Alejandre faces an additional charge of involuntary manslaughter, according to a post on the Aurora Police Department's Facebook page Tuesday.

Police were called to a disturbance at 12:15 a.m. Sunday on the 0-100 block of South State and found Erik Mendez, 36, sprawled in the road unconscious and suffering from a head injury, police said.

Police said their investigation revealed that a birthday party was being held for Mendez in a State Street yard when an argument broke out between him and Colin. The argument escalated into a physical fight that eventually spilled into the road, police said.

At some point during the fight, Alejandre shoved Mendez, causing him to fall backward and hit his head on the pavement, authorities said.

Paramedics took Mendez to a hospital. He was then airlifted to another hospital, where he died.

The two men fled but later were found at Alejandre's home, authorities said.

An autopsy is pending today at the DuPage County coroner's office.

Alejandre's bail was set at $750,000 and Colin's at $250,000. Both men remained at the Kane County jail Tuesday awaiting court dates.
