Hanover Park cautions about mangy coyotes

On its Facebook page, the Hanover Park Police Department is cautioning residents away from close contact with mange-infected coyotes that have been incorrectly reported as malnourished or neglected stray dogs.

According to the department, an unfortunate increase in sarcoptic mange has caused the usually nocturnal animals to become more active during the day due to the effect on their vision.

The affected coyotes suffer hair loss and develop secondary infections that can cause some to resemble a kind of "zombie dog."

Police advise not to approach the usually non-aggressive animals as well as to avoid attracting them by not leaving food out and securing one's garage.
