Injured Grayslake police officer released from hospital

The last of three Grayslake police officers hospitalized after running into a burning home Tuesday to rescue a trapped teenager has been released, police said Wednesday.

Officer Kurt Newman suffered smoke inhalation as a result of the rescue of a 17-year-old boy who couldn't escape the house on the 300 block of Normandy Lane. Sgt. Scott Heimos and officer Sean Madden were treated and released for smoke inhalation Tuesday, authorities said.

The 17-year-old boy, whose name has not been disclosed, was listed in critical condition Tuesday at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. Police did not have an update on his condition Wednesday.

Investigators continue to search for a cause of the fire, which was reported at 12:34 a.m. Tuesday.

Authorities say the officers arrived at the scene to find the home's two other occupants - the teen's grandmother and a sibling - had escaped safely. They told the officers the 17-year-old remained inside the burning home, police said.
