Replacement of collapsed Grayslake culvert underway

Construction is underway to repair a culvert along Center Street in Grayslake that collapsed during last month's record flooding.

The work, expected to take until Sept. 1, is forcing the closure of Center between Route 83 and Atkinson Road.

Lake County transportation officials said the culvert was scheduled for replacement next year, but heavy flash flooding on July 12-13 undermined the structure, leading to a partial collapse. The structure was temporarily repaired immediately after the flood, giving engineers time to design and plan for a permanent fix.

After removing the old culvert, crews will install the new culvert and then replace the pavement, A posted detour uses Atkinson Road, Route 120 and Route 83.
