Schaumburg volunteer appointed to District 211 board seat

A Schaumburg man with a long history of community volunteerism and a professional background in human resources management joined the Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 school board Thursday by a unanimous vote of his soon-to-be colleagues.

Steven Rosenblum will fill the remaining 21 months of the elected term of Lauanna Recker, who resigned in late June citing "recent and significant family matters."

Recker's resignation came a day after a Daily Herald article reported she had attended half the 38 scheduled board meetings of her elected term to that point, and none since Jan. 19.

Rosenblum's appointment takes him through April 2019, and he said he intends to then seek election to a full 4-year term.

Competing with 15 other applicants for the board vacancy, Rosenblum said he'd hoped his interview with the six existing board members Tuesday demonstrated his passion and commitment for the job as well as his understanding of its role and responsibilities.

"I've been a longtime resident of the community and both of my kids are former students of the district," he said.

After the vote, board President Mucia Burke thanked all the applicants and spoke to the unanimous choice of Rosenblum.

"I know I speak for my fellow board members when I say we were impressed with all of the candidates who applied, and we put a lot of thought into our decision," she said. "We believe that Mr. Rosenblum's commitment and dedication to serving our communities matched that of this current board. We look forward to working together in representing the communities we serve to provide outstanding educational opportunities for our students."

Rosenblum moved into District 211 in 1998. His community involvement since then includes serving on the leadership board of the American Diabetes Association Northern Illinois Affiliate, as assistant scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts, and as company chairman for the Toys for Tots Drive.

He's also been a member of the Schaumburg High School booster club, Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54's Advisory Council for District Initiatives, the Beth Tikvah Congregation's board of directors and choir in Hoffman Estates, and St. Hubert's Jobs Ministry.
