Kaneland unveils 2018 budget

The Kaneland school board plans to transfer $3 million from the district's transportation fund to its education fund in the proposed 2017-18 budget to fill in an expected gap between education fund revenue and expenses.

Overall, it plans to increase spending on operations less than 1 percent, according to the budget the board tentatively approved Monday.

In the fiscal year that begins Saturday, the district plans to spend $58.3 million on operations and about $11 million to repay debt.

The board has until Sept. 30 to approve the final budget.

It plans to have a public hearing and vote on the budget Sept. 11.

The district has budgeted for pay increases averaging 4 percent for non-unionized support staff; 3 percent for administrators and unionized support workers; and 3.63 percent for teachers and other certified staff.

The budget includes new carpeting for two elementary schools, new locks on the lockers at Kaneland High School and a replacement driver's education vehicle.

The district expects to end the 2016-17 fiscal year with a $3.1 million deficit, $2.6 million higher than expected, due to having not yet received $2.4 million worth of payments from the state. Those payments are mostly for transportation services, and have been running late the last seven years.

About 74 percent of the district's money will come from property taxes, 19 percent from the state, and 3 percent from the federal government.
