Dist. 203 reviewing 30 applications for board vacancy

Naperville Unit District 203 is considering applications from 30 people seeking to fill a school board vacancy created by the resignation this month of Mike Jaensch.

Superintendent Dan Bridges said the board plans to interview all 30 applicants during closed session meetings Monday and Wednesday. He said the board hopes to recommend an appointee for approval by its July 17 meeting, set for 7 p.m. in the administrative center at 203 W. Hillside Road.

Jaensch, a 10-year board veteran, was elected in 2015 to a term that expires in 2019. But he announced earlier this month that his job as a pilot for American Airlines is transferring him to Texas.

The appointee chosen to fill the remainder of Jaensch's term will serve until the next election on April 2, 2019, at which time a 4-year post will be up for grabs.

This is the second time in as many years the District 203 school board, which oversees the education of nearly 17,000 students, has seen a high level of interest in a vacant board position.

Last year, after the resignation of 6th District Democratic Congressional candidate Suzyn Price, the board received 26 applications to fill her seat. Members chose Charles Cush, who then went on to win a 4-year term in this spring's election.
