Employee accused of stealing from DuPage court clerk

A North Aurora man has been released on bond after being charged with stealing $375 from the office of the DuPage County Clerk of the Circuit Court, authorities said Tuesday.

Ronald Marcelin, 30, of the 100 block of Hettinger Lane, worked for the clerk and had access to cash in the office, authorities said. He's accused of stealing the money from posted bail funds received by the clerk's office on May 9.

He's charged with one count of theft not exceeding $500 from a government institution and one count of official misconduct.

"What Mr. Marcelin is accused of doing is, in essence, stealing from the citizens of DuPage County," State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release. "When viewed through this lens, the allegations become particularly troubling and will not be tolerated."

"When I was informed of possible lost funds after our internal audit, I asked for a comprehensive investigation, taking it wherever it leads," Chris Kachiroubas, clerk of the circuit court, said in the release. "Sadly, the investigation ended with a circuit clerk employee as the central target. In light of this unfortunate incident we have taken necessary steps to ensure this situation will not be repeated."
