Images: #TBT Gallery looks back at suburban fishing derbies

Fishing derbies have been a staple of community recreation for decades for all ages and come in all shapes and sizes.

Digging through the archives, we found images of derbies held in temporary tanks set up in a parking lot, in a community pool after the swimming season was finished and of course in local lakes during the summer and during winter months as ice fishing derbies.

Fishing derbies are hosted by local park districts, towns, forest preserves or - in the case of parking lot fishing derbies - a community service organization.

Fishing is the most participated sport in the United States and has been for decades.

This year search out your local fishing derby and drop in a line, as the Daily Herald continues to photograph many of these derbies as we have for decades Take a look at our images from the 1960s, '70s, '80s and '90s in this #TBT Gallery.
