Theater spotlight: Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' comes to The Gift
The Gift's 'Hamlet'
Daniel Kyri, who has made quite an impression on Chicago Shakespeare, Goodman, Lookingglass and Steppenwolf stages in recent years, plays the titular role in The Gift Theatre's version of William Shakespeare's "Hamlet." Monty Cole directs the production, which features Gift ensemble members John Kelly Connolly as Claudius, Gregory Fenner as Laertes, and Hannah Toriumi and Martel Manning as Hamlet's ill-fated school chums Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Previews at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 1-2, and Wednesday, June 6, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at 4802 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago. Opens Thursday, June 7. $25-$40. (773) 283-7071 or thegifttheatre.org.
Shakespeare and song
Tony Award-winner Len Cariou, who co-stars as Henry Reagan in CBS' "Blue Bloods," brings his show "Broadway and the Bard: An Evening of Shakespeare & Song" to Stage 773 for a brief run. Conceived by Cariou ("Sweeney Todd," "A Little Night Music"), Barry Kleinbort and Mark Janas, the show combines Cariou's two great theater loves: Shakespeare's soliloquies and American musical comedy in the form of sonnets with favorite Broadway tunes. 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 6-8; also 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, June 9, and 3 p.m. Sunday, June 10, at 1225 W. Belmont Ave., Chicago. $35. (773) 327-5252 or stage773.com.
'Laramie Project'

Associate artistic director Derek Bertelsen directs the production, whose cast includes St. Charles resident Peter Surma. Previews at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, June 7-8, at The Raven Theatre, 6157 N. Clark St., Chicago. Opens Saturday, June 9. $12-$25. (773) 828-9129 or astonrep.com.
