5 Oscar nominees with ties to suburbs, Chicago

The long list of Academy Award nominees, announced Tuesday, included plenty of names familiar to movie lovers - and a few with local roots.

Here's a look at five nominees with ties to the suburbs and Chicago:

• Christopher Nolan: Nominated for Best Director and Best Picture for "Dunkirk," Nolan split his childhood years between England and Evanston and, for a time, his family lived in Barrington.

• Steve James: The Oak Park resident was nominated for Best Documentary for "Abacus: Small Enough to Jail," about a family-owned bank serving New York's Chinese community that was the only U.S. bank to face charges following the 2008 financial crisis. James' previous films include "Hoop Dreams" and the Roger Ebert documentary "Life Itself."

• Richard Jenkins: The DeKalb native was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for "The Shape of Water," this year's most-nominated film and one of the front-runners for Best Picture.

• Laurie Metcalf: The Carbondale native earned a Best Supporting Actress nod for "Lady Bird," also nominated for Best Picture. She is an original Steppenwolf Theatre member and has returned to star there in recent years.

• Common: The musician, born and raised in Chicago, was nominated for Best Song for "Stand Up for Something" from the movie "Marshall."
