Open space needs to be more contained

We have lived here for 11 years and tried to add furniture to decorate this space. However, when we do, it never looks good. We have never had drapes. This is a smaller area adjacent to a small dining room. Can you please help us. Thank you

The open space should have a large feature to draw one's attention into the room.

Suggestions

• By placing a buffet or long console piece centered between the two rooms, a focal point is created.

Add a large decorative mirror or artwork above it and an interesting lamp and accessories on top for impact. This piece can be equally functional for both the dining and living ends of the space and provides always needed storage.

• Placing the sofa on the long wall and not in front of the window opens the living space and visually enlarges the space. Two small size accent chairs across from the sofa create a conversation area.

• A narrow rectangular cocktail table would work best in front of the sofa.

• A soft upholstered bench in a great fabric or leather can finish the room and provide extra seating. Add a patterned area rug for warmth, comfort underfoot and visual interest.
