Daisy Ware pitcher was made circa 1903

Q. Enclosed is a photo of a stoneware milk pitcher. I would like to learn about its history and value. As you can see, there is a hole on one side and a hole with a slot on the other side. This was for a lid, which I do not have. Marked on the bottom are the words "Lovatt - Langley Mill- England - Leadless Glaze - 1 Q." The pitcher is decorated with a cobalt blue and tan finish, daisies and a brown handle. Except for the missing lid, it is in very good condition.

What can you tell me?

A. Brothers Albert and John Lovatt started Lovatt Pottery in 1865. They made decorated stoneware and earthenware vases, jugs and pots. In 1905, they introduced lead-free pottery. Your pitcher is also called a jug and is an example of their Daisy Ware line that was in production from 1903 to 1909. The flowers were hand-painted with impasto, a technique of layering paint so the image stands up from the surface. The number "1"and the letter "Q" show it could contain 1 quart of fluid. Lovatt Pottery closed in 1982.

Your jug would probably be worth $75 to $125.

Q. This mark is on the back of a porcelain coffee pot I own. It is decorated with roses on gold band at the top. The handle, lid and spout are also gold. It stands about 9 inches tall and is in mint condition.

What can you tell me about its origin, age and value?

A. Your coffee pot was made by A. Lanternier & Co. in Limoges, France. Frederic Lanternier established a porcelain-decorating company in 1855 in Limoges. It developed a hugely successful decorating business and exported large amounts of tableware. His son, Alfred Lanternier, joined the company in 1887, and the company name was changed to A. Lanternier. They bought a large factory and began producing porcelain doll heads. In 1918, they started making porcelain tableware, coffee sets and tea sets. In 1925, they presented porcelain at the Paris decorative arts exhibits and were awarded the grand prix. They also entered porcelain pieces at the 1931 Paris Colonial Exhibition. A. Lanternier & Co. merged with GDA in 1960.

Your coffee set was made in the late 1800s and would probably be worth $200 to $275.
