Loss of trees removes shade from patio

I'd like to win this contest so we can enjoy and entertain on a shaded, safe, cozy, updated terrace. Ever since we took down two towering, old Linden trees that grew "as one" within a few feet of our addition (too close to the house to be safe from storm damage), our patio has had no shade. Recently, the other main backyard shade tree was hit by lightening and only half remains of what used to be a gorgeous, healthy flowering Bradford Pear.

The back stoop entrance to the patio has also sunk lopsidedly and is unsightly as well as hazardous to guests. The patio's cement deck has aged and has become stained and discolored. Hope you can help us achieve a welcoming area to invite family, friends and neighbors to visit and enjoy together in the backyard of our Mount Prospect house we've owned for over 30 years in the town where we both grew up and have lived for over 60 years!

Thank you for this opportunity.

This homeowner has an aging patio that lacks any kind of shade. Depending on what you want and how much you have to spend, a nice paver or a new cement patio would be ideal because your back door is so close to ground level.

Suggestions

• Patio dining. To best utilize your patio space, we suggest a balcony-height table with umbrella surrounded by four stools in the corner by a barbecue. This design will provide shade from the sun as well as functionality.

• Patio lounging. To create a place where you'd want to relax and enjoy your morning coffee or the evening air, we suggest two lounge chairs with some bright cushions and one or two end tables.

• Ambience. For added color, we would recommend some outdoor, wall-mounted art.
