Letter: Importance of free press can't be overstated

The importance of having a free press was readily seen in the exposure of the sad and cruel results of Trump's "Zero Tolerance" policy at the border, which separated young children from their families. Without the diligent work done by journalists, who are free from government control, this shameful practice would not have been exposed or changed.

Trump's relationship with Fox News is troublesome, as are his accusations of "fake news" for anything that he doesn't like. All dictators control news outlets. They do this is North Korea, Iran and, if he could, Trump would surely do so here. We would see only his narrow and divisive view.

That's what dictators do.

The importance of a free press can never be overstated. I take my hat off to all the good, truthful journalists. Thanks to each of you.
