"Disheartened" is the nicest word I can say about Naperville's June 5 council meeting dealing with an animal welfare ordinance. Three things came to mind while listening to the council debate how the ordinance could be improved: drug trafficking, sex trafficking, dog trafficking.
What they have in common is that the selling of drugs, sex or dogs involve innocent victims. What they don't have in common is that one is legal in Naperville. I ask you to ask your council member to be a hero for voiceless pups sold in pet stores that primarily buy their "product" from manufactured farming facilities, a.k.a puppy mills.
It is so easy to be a hero not a zero on this issue. Give those pet stores a grace period to revamp their business plan. There are many pet stores that do quite well by selling only pet products.
Be a true humane hero by making the ordinance something Naperville could be proud of by saying never again will puppies be sold for profit.
