Memories in Carol Stream, taking a stand in Schaumburg, thinking big in Mundelein and more
How big JB's bank account really is
To put J.B. Pritzker's personal campaign donation of $63 million into perspective: While Chris Kennedy's fortune is undisclosed, the average family member of the Kennedy dynasty has a reported net worth of $40 million - meaning if a person that wealthy spent every penny he or she had, it still would be less than two thirds of Pritzker's campaign cache.
Rauner's bank account is pretty big, too
It also wouldn't come close to matching the $50 million Gov. Bruce Rauner has put into his re-election campaign.
Catching memories
What a treat for Dominic Errichiello. The 92-year-old veteran from Carol Stream opened up about surviving the D-Day invasion at Normandy on a recent episode of the Discovery Channel's "Operation Fishing Freedom." In a boat on Fox Lake years removed from the war, Dominic had himself a day.
Reaching young voters
It's easy to endorse the League of Women Voters of Naperville for its program to provide voting-themed "Birthday Boxes" to high school students who turn 18. The group gave more than a dozen students at Metea Valley packages that included nonpartisan information about voting.
Schaumburg's bumpy little thoroughfare
After the winter, Weathersfield Way from Braintree Drive east in Schaumburg has gotten pretty bumpy. Doesn't it seem like it was just repaved? Schaumburg this year will start working to resurface some of it, up to Salem Drive. A new "off-street" bike path is included in the plans.
Of root beer and biplanes -
Iconic, cozy, smart ... Snoopy is a dog with joie de vivre. Yet, thanks to a story in Neighbor about the new Elmhurst Historical Museum's exhibit "Snoopy and the Red Baron," we learned how much research Charles Schultz did on World War I to create this persona for America's favorite beagle. It's a must see this spring.
Mundelein not messing around
Have you seen the pedestrian bridge proposed to be built over the tracks near Mundelein's Metra station? The plan features two towers and a high, enclosed walkway, with stairs and elevators. It costs up to $5 million. Seemingly small bridges cost millions; that's not a surprise. But what a design and update to the downtown this would bring.
Taking a stand
Suburban students participating in this week's nationwide school walkout did so to protest gun violence and issue a call for change. But they also offered a glimpse at a generation coming of age - and coming together - in tough times. We applaud their strength and passion. And we hope that time diminishes neither.
Taking a stand, Part II
Kudos to Schaumburg High School's Ingrid Hay and Rosemary Mascarenhas, girls water polo players who participated in the school's St. Baldrick's Foundation event by having their heads shaved, donating their hair to the fight against childhood cancer and demonstrating change can be effected personally.
Being accountable in Elgin
In the wake of Monday's police-involved shooting death of an Elgin woman, Police Chief Jeff Swoboda opened his office the next morning and later in the afternoon addressed a group outside headquarters. While some questions couldn't be answered immediately, the mostly civil discourse was a credit to both sides during a difficult time.
