Amnesties are no immigration solution
Your Sept. 5 editorial, "Congress has duty and ability to protect 'Dreamers,' " parrots a familiar but unproven argument: Removal of illegal aliens would be a "blow to the economy."
Are we to believe that none of the 50 million working-age Americans and established immigrants who remain out of our workforce wouldn't step into those jobs now held by "Dreamers?" Jobless American millennials, especially, are the biggest losers thanks to President Obama's lawless executive action that gave work permits to 800,000 young adults and only increased competition in a job market that still leaves much to be desired.
DACA's defenders like to say these "children" had "no say" in being brought here. How much of a say did the American people have about our irresponsible government's decision not to enforce immigration laws created years ago to protect the public and American jobs?
Amnesties are not the answer to curtailing illegal immigration. Since 1986, when President Reagan signed the "one-time only" amnesty for an estimated 1 million illegal aliens because he was told it would be followed by strict enforcement of our laws, there have been seven amnesties that have increased our illegal population to the current 11 million people.
Americans must stop listening to the empty promises of career politicians like Sen. Dick Durbin and his colleagues in both parties who speak of ending an immigration crisis they helped to create for the benefit of the few at the expense of the many.
