Worthwhile thoughts on Revolutionary hero

My thanks to Martha Touhy of Arlington Heights for her letter on July 15 about Robert Morris. I am pleased to report that Chicago has not forgotten this American hero. In Heald Square at Wacker Drive and Wabash stands a large bronze statue of George Washington flanked by Robert Morris and Haym Solomon, both principal financiers of the Revolutionary War. (For details, go to Heald Square Monument.) The statue was commissioned by a group of Chicago civic leaders headed by Barnett Hodes, a prominent Chicago attorney.

The statue was completed in 1941 and designated a Chicago landmark on Sept. 15, 1971. It was my honor as Chairman of the Board at the time of the Chicago Chapter of Robert Morris Associates to represent that organization in the designation ceremony. The original designation ceremony had been postponed because of the outbreak of World War II.
