Purple Heart is earned, not given

In the Herald of April 23, there was an article about President Trump awarding a Purple Heart medal to a wounded soldier. By being wounded in combat, the soldier has the Purple Heart. He is not awarded it by some attention-seeking politician. In World War II, I was injured in Germany and flown back to France to a hospital near Rheims. I was in a ward with nine badly wounded soldiers. We were visited by two sergeants with affidavit forms. By signing the form, the soldier swore that his injury was due to enemy action. Then he was handed a Purple Heart medal. There was no ceremony. no presentation by anyone. It was his medal. He earned it.
