Arlington Heights Aldi getting fresh look

Aldi on the south side of Arlington Heights is refreshing its exterior look with a new facade and larger signs.

The store at 550 E. Golf Road plans to build a small addition on the front that will include two new 75-square-foot Aldi signs, replacing the existing 50-square-foot signs. There will also be six decorative backlit logo discs featuring images of spinach leaves, apples and wineglasses.

The village board this week approved variations for the new signage, not unlike other previously approved variations for grocery store signs, though officials acknowledge the amount of signage is significantly larger than other stores of similar size.

Aldi officials say the signs are reasonable because of the building size and setback from the street. They also said the signs are prototypical of the store's national brand, and the chain is expanding over the next three years.
