Jets place RB Isaiah Crowell on IR with toe injury

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Jets have placed running back Isaiah Crowell on season-ending injured reserve with a toe injury.

Crowell didn't practice all week and had already been ruled out for the Jets' game against Houston on Saturday. He was hurt against Tennessee two weeks ago and re-injured his foot against Buffalo last Sunday.

Crowell has a team-leading 685 yards rushing and six touchdowns. He has never missed a game during his five-year NFL career.

New York signed running back De'Angelo Henderson from the practice squad Friday to take Crowell's roster spot. The Jets also have Elijah McGuire and rookie Trenton Cannon in the backfield.

Crowell signed to a three-year, $12 million deal with New York last March after four seasons with Cleveland.

He set the Jets' franchise mark with 219 yards rushing against the Browns on Oct. 7. But his record-breaking performance was quickly overshadowed by one of his touchdown celebrations in that game, when he pretended to wipe his backside with the football before throwing it into the stands. Crowell was fined $13,369 for the gesture - but also received an endorsement deal from a company that makes a toilet-paper substitute.

Crowell isn't a lock to return next season for the Jets. He is due to make $4 million in 2019, with none of it guaranteed, and would count $5 million against the salary cap. If Crowell is cut in the offseason, the Jets would have to pay $2 million in dead money on the cap.

Crowell, who turns 26 next month, has 3,803 yards rushing and 27 touchdowns in his career, with 117 catches for 922 yards and a score.

Henderson has spent most of the season on the Jets' practice squad after being a sixth-round draft pick of Denver last year out of Coastal Carolina. He was active for one game with New York, against Chicago in Week 8.
