Authorities work to determine cause of fatal house fire

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - Authorities say they're working to determine the cause of a house fire in northern Illinois that left a young child dead.

Rockford Fire Department crews responded early Monday to the home in Rockford and they searched the home for the child.

The child was pulled from the building, was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died. TV station WIFR and the Rockford Register Star report the child has been identified as 22-month-old Matthew Raines.

Several other people were able to get out of the home and a dog was rescued. The fire department estimates the fire caused about $40,000 in damage.
