Peoria pulls plug on contentious riverfront apartments plan

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - Peoria officials have terminated a contentious proposal that would have built apartments on part of what is now a public park along the Illinois River.

The city's agreement with the project developer had been active since April 2015 but faced public complaints about selling the six acres of city park property. The (Peoria) Journal Star reports city officials sent a letter to the developer this month ending that agreement after the latest six-month extension expired in late June.

The proposal had called for construction of 143 apartments on part of Riverfront Park near the city's downtown.

The not-for-profit group Friends of Riverfront Park is urging city officials to take additional steps for securing the property as public green space.
