Woman gets prison in fatal motel beating of boyfriend

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A woman accused with her brother of fatally beating her boyfriend at a southwestern Indiana motel has been sentenced to prison.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports 55-year-old Cheryl Rumsey was sentenced Thursday to 20 years, including five years of probation, after earlier pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter. She originally was charged with murder in the August 2017 death of 53-year-old Paul Phillips.

Rumsey and her brother, Steven Bailey, were arrested after Phillips was found dead with severe injuries to his head and face in a room of the Evansville Inn and Suites. Bailey faces an Aug. 8 trial.

Police have said an argument escalated to a fight and Rumsey kept kicking Phillips after he fell to the floor.
