Man convicted of killing 5 in 1972 granted parole

CHICAGO (AP) - Parole has been granted a man convicted of killing five people in a suburban Chicago restaurant more than 45 years ago.

The Illinois Prison Review Board on Thursday granted Carl Reimann parole in an eight-to-four vote. Jason Sweat, the board's chief legal counsel, tells The Beacon-News in Aurora it was the 77-year-old Reimann's 20th appearance before the parole board.

The then 32-year-old Reimann and his girlfriend, Betty Piche were found guilty of the murders during a robbery of the Pine Village restaurant in Yorkville in December 1972.

Morris police caught Reimann and Piche nearly an hour after the shooting. Reimann was sentenced to 150 years for each murder and 60 years for armed robbery. Piche, who was also convicted, was paroled in 1983.

Sweat says although parole has been granted, the board must set conditions for Reimann's release that he must agree to before he is set free.
