Final day for barge builder Jeffboat's Ohio River shipyard

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Workers at a southern Indiana barge and towboat manufacturer are entering their final day on the job as the Ohio River shipyard closes its doors.

Monday was the last day of ship building operations at Jeffboat's Jeffersonville shipyard just north of Louisville, Kentucky.

Parent company American Commercial Lines announced the closure plans in March for the shipyard that traces its roots back more than 180 years.

Jeffboat employed more than 1,300 employees at its peak during World War II, but only about 80 workers remained as operations wound down Monday.

Glen McMahan has worked at Jeffboat for 42 years as a gantry crane operator. The 64-year-old tells The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Kentucky, that he hates losing his job and he isn't sure what he'll do next after Monday's closure.
