Astronomical society opens observatory in Central Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - An astronomical society in Central Illinois is inviting the public to go on an adventure of cosmic proportions.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports a group of space enthusiasts have worked to expand their observatory to be more accessible to the public.

The Champaign-Urbana Astronomical Society is opening its Prairie Winds Observatory Saturday after four years of construction. The larger facility is now handicapped-accessible and will house the society's four telescopes.

The telescopes are motorized meaning researchers can look at more object in a shorter amount of time. They will also allow analysts to better monitor crater formations and the path of stars.

Society members paid for the bulk of the $36,000 in observatory renovations.
