Chicago-area man faces gun, drugs charges

ST. CHARLES, Ill. (AP) - A 27-year-old suburban Chicago man faces an armed-violence charge after police allegedly found illegal drugs and a gun in his car.

A Tuesday statement from the Kane County state's attorney's office says Daniel Saavedra of Carpentersville is also charged with unlawful possession of cannabis and unlawful possession with intent to deliver.

Charging documents say Carpentersville police stopped Saavedra for a traffic violation, discovering the gun and drugs. Under Illinois law, those who are armed at the time they commit a felony also commit armed violence.

If convicted, Saavedra could face a minimum 15-year prison sentence.

After his Sunday arrest, Saavedra appeared in bond court, where a judge set bail at $50,000. The statement didn't indicate the name of a defense attorney and didn't say if he bonded out from jail.
