Widow of slain police commander thanks Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) - The widow of the Chicago police commander who was fatally shot last week is thanking the city for what she calls an "outpouring of love and support."

In an open letter released Tuesday, Erin Bauer tells of how moved she was by all the people who paid their respects to Commander Paul Bauer at his wake, funeral or stood by the thousands along the roadway as the funeral procession rolled past.

She writes that the man accused of killing her husband "almost stole my faith in humanity but the City of Chicago and the rest of the nation restored it."

Bauer was killed last Tuesday as he tried to detain a man being chased by other officers. Alleged gunman Shomari Legghette has been charged with first-degree murder and other charges.
