UNC women's players Walker, Watts out for season

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina says injured junior guards Destinee Walker and Stephanie Watts are officially out for the season.

Neither player has played this season after suffering knee injuries late in 2016-17, so both will redshirt and will have two years of eligibility left, starting in 2018-19.

Dr. Harry Stafford, a team physician, said Tuesday that it was "in the best interest of (the players') health" to sit out this season. Coach Sylvia Hatchell says the Tar Heels have "exercised extreme caution" during their rehab.

Watts was the Atlantic Coast Conference's freshman of the year in 2016 and a preseason all-ACC pick this year who set a conference record with 10 3-pointers in a game in 2016. Walker has twice been selected as the team's defensive player of the year.
