Washington beats WSU 56-49 for 1st conference win of season

SEATTLE (AP) - Hannah Johnson tied a career high with 13 points and grabbed a career-best 17 rebounds to help Washington defeat Washington State 56-49 on Sunday to snap a seven-game losing streak and pick up its first Pac-12 victory of the season.

Johnson turned in her second double-double in two games and third in the last four as the Huskies (7-12, 1-7) rebounded from a 78-75 overtime loss at Washington State (9-11, 2-6) on Wednesday and denied the Cougars their first season sweep since 2013-14 season.

Amber Melgoza added 14 points and Jenna Moser 10 for Washington, which took a 32-15 halftime lead after the Cougars shot just 19 percent.

The Cougars, trailing by 15 entering the fourth quarter, used a 12-2 run, with five points from Chanelle Molina, to get within three, 52-49, with 1:17 remaining.

Mai-Loni Henson found herself alone for a jumper with 46 seconds left after a Cougar tried to throw the ball off her legs while falling out of bounds. It was Washington's first field goal in nearly six minutes and gave the Huskies a 54-49 lead. After Washington State was called for a moving screen, Melgoza added two free throws with 24 seconds remaining.

Molina scored 17 points and Kayla Washington 10 for the Cougars while Louise Brown grabbed 11 rebounds. Borislava Hristova, who scored 25 points in Wednesday's victory and came into Sunday's contest as the Pac-12's leading scorer at 19.5 points per game, made only 1 of 11 shots and finished with three points.
