Human skull at construction site may be from old cemetery

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - Police say they think a human skull found at a construction site in western Indiana was from an old cemetery.

Terre Haute police Chief John Plasse says investigators are reasonably sure the skull is from a burial site, probably Indian Orchard Cemetery. The cemetery was located north of the former ICON building, which is being renovated for use as loft apartments.

The Tribune-Star reports Indian Orchard Cemetery is Vigo County's oldest known cemetery and was marked by a sign in a parking lot. The newspaper's archives show Indian Orchard became the first burial ground of a village called "Orchardtown," later to be Terre Haute.

Core Development of Indianapolis is investing $20 million as part of the effort to convert the building into about 160 riverfront lofts.
