Stoke fires Hughes after Cup defeat to 4th-tier Coventry

STOKE, England (AP) - Stoke has fired manager Mark Hughes after the relegation-threatened Premier League team was beaten 2-1 by fourth-tier Coventry in the FA Cup third round on Saturday.

Stoke says "We would like to thank Mark for all he has achieved for the club over the last four and a half years, notably in guiding us to three successive ninth places finishes in the Premier League, and we wish him every success for the future."

The club "will look to appoint a new manager as soon as possible and will be making no further comment at this time."

Hughes took over as manager in May 2013, replacing fellow Welshman Tony Pulis.

Stoke is 18th in the Premier League with 20 points from 22 games.

Hughes, a former Manchester United star, had exactly 200 games in charge of the Potters, following spells in charge of QPR, Fulham, Manchester City, Blackburn and Wales.
