Suspected burglar kills self after Terre Haute standoff

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - Police in western Indiana say a suspected burglar fatally shot himself following a standoff with officers.

Terre Haute police say officers found 29-year-old Ronald Norton Jr. after being called Sunday evening about a burglar leaving a house in a neighborhood east of the city's downtown. Authorities say he pointed a gun at his head as several officers with rifles surrounded the area and negotiators tried to persuade him to surrender before he shot himself.

Assistant Police Chief Shawn Keen tells the Tribune-Star that Norton died from his injuries.

Police say Norton was wanted on arrest warrants for burglary, criminal recklessness and auto theft charges.
