Indiana county eyes stormwater basin to ease flooding

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) - Officials in a central Indiana county plan to build a stormwater collection basin along a highway to ease flooding that's long plagued an adjacent subdivision.

Howard County's commissioners recently approved a $280,000 contract to buy 20 acres along Indiana 26 for a stormwater basin across from the Ivy Hills subdivision.

The county council is expected to vote at its next meeting on appropriating the necessary funds for that purchase.

County Stormwater District Administrator Greg Lake tells The Kokomo Tribune that the project would "hold back the water quantity that rushes through Ivy Hills" during periods of heavy precipitation.

He says construction of the basin could start in late spring or early summer 2018.
