Freedom denied mother who slashed daughter's throat

WHEATON, Ill. (AP) - A judge has ruled a suburban Chicago woman will remain in the care of the Illinois Department of Human Services for the 2010 death of her 4-year-old daughter.

DuPage County Judge George Bakalis on Monday denied Marci Webber's request for conditional release. However, he said he will reconsider her request in six months.

The now 50-year-old Webber was sentenced to a lifetime of involuntary commitment in 2012 after being found not guilty of first-degree murder by reason of insanity.

According to prosecutors, Webber told relatives the night before the slaying that she feared "Satan was going to kidnap" her daughter, Magdalene. Prosecutors also say Webber told police she killed her child to prevent her from being raped and sold as a sex slave.

The child's throat was slashed and the words "divine mercy" were scrawled in blood on a nearby wall.

Webber said Bakalis' decision is a "travesty of justice."
