AP FACT CHECK: Trump on military death, taxes, judges

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Donald Trump boasted this past week that he surpasses his predecessors in consoling families of the fallen.

That claim is hard to sustain.

Associated Press interviews with bereaved families found that many never heard from him after losing their loved ones in military service. The suddenly fraught subject overshadowed other matters in Washington for days.

AP Fact Checks found misstatements from the president on a variety of fronts.

For example, Trump denounced what he called unprecedented roadblocks from Democrats as he struggles to win confirmation of his judicial nominees.

But at this point in his presidency, he's had more judges confirmed than his immediate two predecessors did.

ADDS TRUMP'S RESPONSE TO REP. WILSON - In this Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017, frame from video, Myeshia Johnson cries over the casket of her husband, Sgt. La David Johnson, who was killed in an ambush in Niger, upon his body's arrival in Miami. President Donald Trump told the widow that her husband "knew what he signed up for," according to Rep. Frederica Wilson, who said she heard part of the conversation on speakerphone. In a Wednesday morning tweet, Trump said Wilson's description of the call was "fabricated."
