CIA chief says US needs Pakistan help on Taliban safe havens

WASHINGTON (AP) - CIA Director Mike Pompeo (pahm-PAY'-oh) says the U.S. is going to do everything it can to bring the Taliban to the negotiating table in Afghanistan.

Pompeo says for that to happen, Pakistan must first deny the militants a safe haven on its soil.

He tells a Washington think tank that's necessary so the Taliban have "zero hope" of winning on the battlefield.

Pompeo says history indicates that expectations of Pakistan's willingness to cooperate in fighting "radical Islamic terrorism" should be set very low. Still, he says he remains hopeful that Pakistan will help the U.S. by stopping cross-border movements by militants and their ability to hide in Pakistan.
