Officials Mishawaka school evacuated after gas leak

MISHAWAKA, Ind. (AP) - Authorities are investigating a noxious odor that led to the evacuation of a Mishawaka elementary school.

The South Bend Tribune reports a "gas odor" was detected Friday afternoon at Walt Disney Elementary, which prompted the evacuation of students.

Fire Department officials say the smell was caused by a chemical used to clean a boiler. A hazmat team was called in after some firefighters complained of skin irritation.

The school says the equipment will be examined over the weekend. Air quality tests will also be conducted.

It is unknown if the school will reopen Monday.
