Ex-Muncie police chief sues mayor over FBI investigation

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - Muncie's former police chief is suing the mayor, claiming he was pressured to investigate a city employee who was believed to be cooperating with an FBI investigation.

Steve Stewart, who stepped down as chief a year ago, filed the lawsuit Wednesday in U.S. District Court seeking unpaid wages and other costs and punitive damages.

The Star Press reports it alleges Mayor Dennis Tyler and longtime Democratic Party leader Phil Nichols badgered Stewart into conducting a police investigation of the worker suspected of cooperating with the FBI.

FBI investigators in January raided the office of Muncie's building commissioner, Nichols' son Craig Nichols, and he was indicted the following month on federal charges of wire fraud, theft, and money laundering.

City spokeswoman Sarah Beach said it had no comment on the lawsuit.
