Northern Indiana trail seeking money boost after big repair

PERU, Ind. (AP) - The group overseeing a 40-mile-long recreation trail in northern Indiana is looking for a fundraising boost after paying for some big repairs over the summer.

A leader of the Nickel Plate Trail organization says it spent about $12,000 to replace a trail section after heavy rains in June washed out a culvert near the Miami County city of Peru.

Organization president Mike Kuepper tells the Kokomo Tribune the group had enough money on hand, but the expense was a big drain on its maintenance fund. He's hoping the annual Cole Porter Classic 5K and 15K races it sponsors will help refresh that fund.

The trail runs from just north of Kokomo to Rochester. The Cole Porter Classic runs are scheduled for Oct. 7 in Peru.
