Chicago suburbs waive fees for homeowners affected by floods

LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. (AP) - Two Chicago suburbs will waive building permit fees for property owners who were affected by flooding in July.

The Chicago Tribune reports the fees in Libertyville and Mundelein can range between $35 and $1,000 for repairs like replacing hot water tanks and renovating basements.

Mundelein decided on the temporary waiver, which lasts through the end of the year, during a board meeting last month. Libertyville's waiver will go until Jan. 25.

Ray Semple is a Mundelein village trustee. He says it's the right thing to do since people have been through so much.

More than 3,200 homes in Cook, Kane, Lake and McHenry counties were damaged by record flooding in July. Gov. Bruce Rauner has asked President Donald Trump's administration to approve federal assistance for property owners.
