Illinois nursing home resident death caused by hot weather

URBANA, Ill. (AP) - A coroner report says the death of a 78-year-old Illinois nursing home resident nearly three months ago was caused by hyperthermia due to exposure to hot weather.

The News-Gazette reports that Champaign County Nursing Home resident Sonya J. Kington was found dead in the home's courtyard when high temperatures reached nearly 90 degrees.

The coroner report says Kington was found lying in direct sunlight with vomit on the sides of her mouth. No signs of trauma were found.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup says the patient's dementia was also a factor in her death.

The death occurred in the last weeks that Management Performance Associates of suburban St. Louis was overseeing the home. Northbrook-based SAK Management Services Inc. has since taken over the facility's management.

Illinois State Police and attorney general's office are investigating the death for possible charges.
